Don't get me wrong, they fulfilled the request. Just- not exactly as I expected.
[He shifts just enough to lean against Garrus' side; the turian's arm might be heavy, but it's a welcome sort of weight, a reassuring one.]
It's contained in me. I did ask to have it put back where it came from, but... making use of the whole vessel thing wasn't really what I was thinking, you know? [And after a beat, he breathes out a sigh before he adds:] But it does mean I have proof. I know exactly where the thing is-- and I know it, it would've possessed me already if it possibly could.
[And Ryan has to carry that around? Garrus can't imagine having the bullet that killed him from Adrien's gun in his possession, let alone back inside him. It'll be a regular reminder that Ryan can never get away from.]
Shit, Ryan. I'm sorry. I mean, I'm glad it can't hurt you, but...
[But it's still going to hurt him, likely. And of course the CDC would do things like that. Of course they'd find a way to make it not what was really wanted.]
If I can... The next one. The wording of the next one. If I can help you with that, I will.
[It's the sort of thing he has to let other people be horrified about for him. He just can't be, even with the nightmares having that spirit put in him has been causing-- the thing is his responsibility, as he sees it. He'd asked for its containment because he hadn't been able to clean up his own mess after he couldn't keep it from getting through, and maybe it's appropriate that now he gets to deal with this.
Ryan's still exhausted, though, slumping against him. It's a heavy conversation for how tired he is.]
And don't worry, I was more careful with my second. I just-- didn't fully realize what I was dealing with when I signed on, you know? I don't regret doing it, but it wasn't til I got to Ajna that I understood.
[Okay. Garrus isn't really sure that's true, not with the way Ryan slumps against him. But all he can do is work with what he's given, so instead of protesting that it can't be right Garrus simply switches to holding Ryan, both arms around the man. He touches his temple to Ryan's before replying.]
I know. Had no idea what I was getting into either. I tell you how dumb my request was? Because it wasn't my brightest moment. I was angry, and for destroying a world, I got a gun. A good gun, the best I had back home, but just a gun.
[Maybe his own stupidity will be a comfort.]
It's the one on my back, actually, the Widow, if you wanna see it. On the other hand, I don't have to move or go anywhere, so that can wait if you want too.
[He'll be more okay once he's slept; enough time being held, and he may well end up dozing off on Garrus unintentionally. Ryan shifts to get comfortable, curling against his side when his arms wrap around him.]
Seems like experience is always the best teacher here, huh? You can prepare all you want, but you really learn it in action.
[It's more like an idle thought than anything, his tone lighter, sounding almost distracted.]
...at least it's been that way for me. I don't know. Sometimes I'm still not convinced that I know much more about what I'm doing-- but at least we both got something out of it, yeah?
[It could be worse. They could have gone through Ajna and received nothing for their trouble, for almost dying. Actually dying, in Garrus' case.]
Maybe? You know I'm not the close combat type, I'd figure you would want me to be able to keep my distance more once I can aim well enough for it.
[Though after a moment, he huffs out a sigh, adding-] Alright, if I can aim well enough for it. I don't know that I'll ever really end up much of a marksman, honestly.
[He might not give himself enough credit, but given that it's not his primary focus... well, Ryan's often his harshest critic, and he's sure he could be improving faster. The thing is being able to put more time into it when supplies are low and time is generally at a premium.]
Honestly, I'll be happy if we can teach you how to handle an assault rifle and you can just spray bullets and hope they hit something.
[There's more teasing in his voice now.]
Sniping takes focus and not worrying about more than one target at a time, knowing you'll have the others or the people you're with'll have them. If you wanna learn that, then I'll definitely teach you. But it'll take markmanship, calm, all of it.
[He smooths Ryan's hair back, fingers playing a little with the curls. It's meant to be a soothing gesture, something to help Ryan relax, but Garrus isn't entirely sure hair and scalps work like that. It's worth a try, though.]
Whatever winds up serving you best, keeping you safest, Ryan.

[It's a horrified echo.]
The thing that killed you. It's in you.

We got something. Still not sure I know what I'm doing either, though. But we'll get there. One way or another. Have to, right?
[That, or die again. Even if he doesn't know what he's doing in regard to the CDC or relationships or the young he's been gathering.]
Maybe if you're really lucky I'll teach you how to use a sniper's rifle after you get a handle on regular shooting.
[It's teasing, and he nuzzles the top of Ryan's head as he speaks. He knows Ryan has no fondness for guns.]
She's a work of art, the Widow.
